Confessional poetry centers on the poet’s own life, presenting intimate, autobiographical material in a direct, first-person voice. It treats personal experiences—mental illness, family history, sexuality, trauma, grief—as valid subjects for poetry, often with frank candor and emotional immediacy. This mode emerged in mid-20th-century American poetry as a shift toward exposing private life to the light of verse. Sylvia Plath and Robert Lowell are central figures in this movement; Lowell’s Life Studies is widely seen as a touchstone for confessional poetry, and Plath’s work, especially in Ariel, pushes intimate self-revelation with concrete, precise detail. The other options point to different traditions—mythic epic retellings, political satire, or abstract symbolism—none of which foreground the personal, autobiographical revelation that defines confessional verse.
